Harry Kane became the seventh English player to score a Champions League hat-trick

Kane made his first-team debut for Tottenham on 25 August 2011 in a UEFA Europa League match against Hearts. Before establishing himself in Tottenham's first team.

Harry Kane continued his sensational year by scoring a Champions League hat-trick in Tottenham's sensational away win to APOEL Nicosia.

In so doing, Kane became the seventh English striker to hit three goals in a Champions League match.

We take a look back at the others who have taken home a match ball from an outing in Europe's elite club competition.

MIKE NEWELL - BLACKBURN ROVERS 4-1 Rosenborg (December 6, 1995)

Playing in their one and only Champions League campaign having memorably won the Premier League in 1995, Blackburn struggled to make much of an impression.

They lost their first three group matches to Spartak Moscow, Rosenborg and Legia Warsaw, leaving them down and out.

They did manage to salvage a scrap of pride - and their only win of the competition - when Newell's quick-fire Treble earned a 4-1 win over Rosenborg on matchday six.

The three goals were scored in just nine minutes, which stood as the record for the fastest Champions League hat-trick for 16 years until Lyon's Bafetimbi Gomis scored a seven-minute triple in 2011.

ANDREW COLE - Feyenoord 1-3 MANCHESTER UNITED (November 5, 1997) and MANCHESTER UNITED 5-1 Anderlecht (September 13, 2000)

The first Englishman to score two hat-tricks in the Champions League was Andrew Cole of Manchester United, three years apart.

United flew through their group in 1997-98, beating Kosice, Juventus and Feyenoord to sit pretty at the top. In the Rotterdam return, Cole's hat-trick pretty much secured United's place in the quarter-finals.

Cole scored twice before half-time to quieten a hostile atmosphere at the De Kuip and rounded off his treble in the 73rd minute. United would be eliminated by Monaco in the last eight.

Fast-forward three years and Cole's hat-trick against Belgian side Anderlecht at Old Trafford got United's campaign off to an emphatic start with a 5-1 win.

Denis Irwin also converted a penalty and Teddy Sheringham found the net on a comfortable night though Anderlecht would ultimately pip United to top spot in the group.

Alex Ferguson's team would once again reach the quarter-finals in this season before being knocked out by eventual winners Bayern Munich.

MICHAEL OWEN - Spartak Moscow 1-3 LIVERPOOL (October 22, 2002) and Wolfsburg 1-3 MANCHESTER UNITED (December 8, 2009)

Owen's hat-trick away to Spartak Moscow proved the highlight of an otherwise disappointing Champions League campaign which saw them crash out at the group stage.

Having opened with a defeat in Valencia and a home draw with Basle, the Reds needed to take maximum points from their double-header with the Russians.

They did, winning 5-0 at home and then 3-1 away, thanks to Owen's predatory scoring instincts. But another loss to Valencia and an away draw to Basle saw them crash into the UEFA Cup.

Owen went on to score another hat-trick in the competition when he moved to Manchester United later in his career.

Ferguson's team had already secured their place in the knockout stage but Owen's three goals away to Wolfsburg in the final game ensured top spot and an easier knockout draw.

United won 3-1 in Germany, making it four wins from six in a group that also contained CSKA Moscow, their opponents this Wednesday, and Besiktas. 

ALAN SHEARER - NEWCASTLE UNITED 3-1 Bayer Leverkusen (February 26, 2003)

Back in the days when the Champions League had two group phases, Newcastle fought their way through the first one only to be handed a devilishly tough second.

Having already lost to Inter Milan and Barcelona, Bobby Robson's team needed to take maximum points off Bayer Leverkusen, finalists the previous season, to stand any chance of reaching the quarter-finals.

They duly won 3-1 in Germany and repeated the scoreline at St James' Park, thanks wholly to Shearer's first-half hat-trick, the highlight of which was a diving header.

Shearer would score twice more in a 2-2 draw in the San Siro but Newcastle exited the competition after losing at home to Barcelona. 

WAYNE ROONEY - MANCHESTER UNITED 6-2 Fenerbahce (September 28, 2004)

This was Wayne Rooney's debut after completing a £27m move from Everton a few weeks earlier. And it would become a fairytale start for the teenage England prodigy.

A stunning hat-trick in a thrashing of the Turkish side, capped with a marvellous free-kick, immediately endeared Rooney to the Old Trafford faithful and promised so much more to come.

United won three of their six group matches but had to settle for second in the group behind Lyon. This landed them a tough last-16 draw with Milan, who knocked them out.

For Rooney, however, this hat-trick was merely the start. 

DANNY WELBECK - ARSENAL 4-1 Galatasaray (October 1, 2014)

Welbeck was the last Englishman to strike three in the Champions League prior to Kane as Arsenal brushed aside their Turkish visitors on an entertaining night at the Emirates.

Signed from Manchester United a month earlier, Welbeck made himself at home with two goals before half-time and another seven minutes into the second-half as Galatasaray just couldn't contain him.

Arsene Wenger's side went on to finish second in the group, edged out on goal difference by Borussia Dortmund. To the surprise of many, they were then beaten by Monaco in the round of 16.
